Oh Chiho 〈September Landscape of Mt. Mudeung〉

1949.

Oil on panel, 24.5×32.5cm, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea

Oh Chiho executed the painting on the year he was appointed as a professor at Chosun University. Mount Mudeung that spreads widely surrounding the city, can be seen anywhere in Gwangju, making it a representative landscape of the city. Oh shows the change of seasons at the foot of the mother-like mountain with clear colors reflected in the sunlight of southern region. This bright color expression is one of the major characteristics of Oh’s artworks. The divisionist touches used in the previous works disappear, and instead the attempt, made in the 1940s, to compose objects with color fields, and the composition simplified by removing details are shown in this work. The smooth brushstroke painted on panel (plywood) instead of canvas is another characteristic of the work.
