Kim Whanki had a strong attachment to Korean antiques. While collecting antiques, paintings, and calligraphic works, he considered moon jars to be the best among the existing aesthetic values, and started to use them as major subjects in his paintings from the 1940s. In the Paris period (1956–1959), Korean subjects such as mountains and the moon, apricot blossoms, and white porcelain jars are depicted in a more refined form. From the traditional woman carrying a load in this work created in the 1950s, Kim’s longing for the homeland and his identity as a Korean artist are well represented.
