Fateh Moudarres 〈Albouraq Looking for Owner〉
1993.
Oil on Canvas, 70x80cm, Collection of Atassi Foundation For Arts and Culture
Al-Bouraq is depicted as an animal being presented in Islamic stories as the bearer of the prophets, and he is the one who conveyed the Prophet Muhammad in the “Isra and Miʿraj.” In Moudarres’ painting, he appears in the midst of two figures, a man and a woman, searching for his “owner.” It should be noted that the word “Malik” in Islam is considered as one of the names of God, “The Owner of all Sovereignty.” The artist’s use of all these projections stems from his connection to the region and his deep understanding of its societies. The man and woman may also represent Adam and Eve.
