Shining on your days

Chun Kyung-ja 〈Hollyhock〉

1947.

Ink and color on paper, 41.7×64.7cm, Gwangju Museum of Art

Chun Kyung-ja majored in oriental (East Asian) painting. Even when Western painting was popular due to Western art introduced through Japan, Chun went her own way as a Korean-polychrome-painting artist using oriental painting materials and established a unique painting style. This work is a part of the artist’s early works and was drawn during her teaching career at Jeonnam Girls’ High School. Afterwards, the artist adds color to the Eastern painting method and develops a painting style that depicts a woman’s sorrow and dreams in a fantastical way.
