Imperfect Pride was created in Gwangju as part of the artist residency with the ACC. It consists of three moon jars in various states of deformation and is finished with red, white, and blue glazes. The moon jar, a revered vessel from Korea’s rich ceramic history, has also become a symbol of Korean culture and identity, even being featured during the PyeongChang Olympics. The red, white, and blue color scheme represents the prominent colors in the American flag and its association with national patriotism. The work reflects upon the artist’s identity as a Korean American and the imperfect relationship regarding the dualities of cultural association.
