Gold Crown from Geumnyeongchong Tomb,
Three Kingdoms Period (Silla) , National Museum
of Korea
The is a series of photographs capturing gold relic collections from domestic and international museums. The artist became interested in gold during his visit to Australia in 2015, and began the series the following year while photographing gold relics at the Gold Museum of Peru. Gold is a symbol of absolute power and represents human greed and longing for eternity. However, this work shows gold that remains as a relic after the desires of humans in the past have gone away. The series maximizes the nobility and splendor of Silla Dynasty’s gold relics, such as the Cap style Crown and Gold Diadem Ornament from Cheonmachong Tomb, the Gold Crown from Geumnyeongchong Tomb and the Gold Crown from Geumgwanchong Tomb. The composition, which places the relics in the exact center of a golden background, vividly conveys the splendid and delicate aesthetics of the Silla Dynasty’s heritage. In this exhibition, the works are installed on the floor of the exhibition hall, allowing the visitors to appreciate the shining gold from a new perspective through the exhibition structure and lightbox display that resembles the excavation of relics.
