Park Weayeon, Age 101, Lost her son during Korean war, The War Memorial of Kore

The series captures objects from the collection of the War Memorial of Korea, such as crumpled combat boots, rusty bowls, helmets with holes, bullets and warheads, which keep their positions silently in front of a calm, achromatic, ash-colored background. The artist aimed to capture the horror and tragedy of war by photographing a single image of a weapon from the Korean War, a military badge, a letter, and a portrait of a mother waiting for her son. When our gaze as a viewer is focused on the object in the same way as the artist’s, it reminds us of an unknown person who may have used these objects during the war, creating a solemn feeling, and at the same time makes us think once again about what the war has left and the reality of division that we face now. In this exhibition, the series is seen as a large-scale video installation rather than a printed photographic work.
