Tae Yeun Kim’s work reveals the fundamental characteristics of nonhuman life-forms using a multifaceted approach. The artist argues that a life-form is “not only limited to cells but also
refers to the expansive category of everything that takes the form of a life-form, from cells to viruses, objects, and pseudo–life-forms that imitate life-forms,” and all these life-forms
are united in their pursuit to extend their life spans. The series {Becoming Life} is inspired by the famous paintings of Sandro Botticelli (1445 ~ 1510), {La nascita di Venere} (1485 ~ 1486), and Henri Émile-Benoît Matisse’s (1869 ~ 1954) painting {La Danse} (1910). Just as these two masterpieces invited viewers to abandon conventional views and rethink life in terms of the human body’s beauty and rhythm, Kim’s work reflects on the meaning of life through the deconstruction and reconstruction of the famous masterpieces through a microscopic
approach resembling the microscopic examination of a cell. Furthermore, the {Pain of Plants} series, which examines whether plants can feel pain as humans do, started from Kim’s belief that all life-forms fear death and want to extend their life. The artist invites viewers to experience firsthand how plants respond to pain in a virtual reality (VR) space. In this VR
simulation, humans discover that their touch, which seems unremarkable to them, can be a great pain or act of violence to plants. Through this, Kim argues that humans cannot treat any
nonhumans without respect.
