Kim Seola’s {Nine Dark Openings, Sounds of Breath} is a part of the {Nine Dark Openings} series, made up of “Symptom, Rumor, Insidious, Broken Sound, Sounds of Breath, and Division.” The nonhuman life-form Kim created is based on her experience of being exiled to different cities by the establishment of a large-scale chemical industrial complex in her hometown. In the desolate spaces she found herself in, Kim began to discover and observe the fragile beings that drift across spaces, such
as fungi, insects, ashes, and microorganisms. The artist then associated the secretions of these beings—withering away, bowed, wounded, and in pain as they pass in and out of the boundary—with the Hindu and Buddhist ideas of the human body as a city with nine openings and a wound. In addition, all beings
above the earth are organically connected and mutually dependent and can only exist in a cycle. By linking seemingly insignificant beings with the human body’s fragile openings, Kim
shows that all beings are eternally connected in a relationship of mutual effect.
