Yuichi Hirako presents Leaf Shape 02, Yggdrasill 05, and Gift 15, and Wooden Wood 28 in this exhibition. These works feature a character called Tree Man, a hybrid creature with a human body and a tree-shaped head. The works revolve around the story of the Tree Man, portraying the character as living independently in an untouched forest on the other side of the Earth, coexisting harmoniously with other forms of life. Forests, the primary setting for the works, are generally considered sacred spaces in Japan. Serving as a core of the ecosystem, flora and fauna rely on it for their necessities in life. Creating an imaginative story of a being that is both tree and human, Hirako allows us to contemplate humans’ relationships with the other living things that comprise the Earth’s ecosystem.
