BCL is a bio-art group focusing on the possibility of artistic application of advanced bio-engineering and studying its ethical issues on society and individuals. is a project that gives a beating heart to a virtual pop idol, Hatsune Miku created by Vocaloid, Yamaha’s voice synthesis software. The group requested fans of Hatsune Miku to create digital synthetic Genome that could contain not only biological data but also encrypted messages, images, and music. Parts of this synthetic DNA were introduced into iPS(Induce pluripotent stem) cell, which were transformed into living heart-muscle cells – or cardiomyocytes, and soon the cells started to beat by their own. By showing a video of Hatsune Miku‘s heart beating, and the real- time rendering process of embodying the heartbeats next to each other, throws a question on differences and
similarities between digital life and biological life, and the possibility of generating life through data.
