Attention! Zombies

MOON Sohyun

〈Just a Zombie〉, 2022.

color animation video, sound, 8min, commissioned by Asia Culture Center, courtesy of the artist

In a form of stop motion animation and puppet show that evoke grotesque atmosphere, MOON Sohyun produces artworks that show trauma, violence, anxiety, and desire that exist inside of the people who live in modern society. sees zombies that often accepted as a horrifying and grotesque creature of death and defective resurrection, fatal infection, a wrecked body, and ruthless collectivity in a different perspective. The artist considers the core of zombie is a straightforward desire, hunger. And away from the complicated modern society where the obsession of learning new things are endless, and the anxiety and wariness towards unknown crisis are evoked, the artist imagines our society might be happier if we have the strong
and distinct direction as zombies have. The artist’s imagination on a happy and equal society that rather can be discovered in a zombie state changes the direction of violence and horror given to zombie towards us in modern society, and induces rediscovery of our society’s reality and zombies.
