SungHong Min focuses on the responses, including the anxiety people feel when the surroundings inevitably change in daily life due to the social system and how they recognize. He dismantles and reconstructs abandoned objects to create variable structures and installations, which lost their original purposes after people left their residences. The artist expresses tactilely the moment when an individual confronts environment changes by adding a thin film, like vinyl, to the structure where large and small objects are combined.
The artworks cover Min’s journey of study, reaching his latest series, Skin_Layer (2021-22), coincident with keywords such as “atypical,” “variability,” and “adaptation attitude.” Exercise for Sensitivity (2020) is a printed carpet with old and imitated landscapes on the walls of the old apartment. These ambiguous landscapes became another form of land for Min. He re-combines fragments from the landscape paintings, prints them on the tent fabric, and turns them into something similar to the floating topography and camouflage net. Adaptation attitude_Camouflage net (2020–21) is considered the starting point of Skin_Layer. The artist wore the tent fabric himself in the photograph, which implies the artist’s attitude as to how to respond to external influences. Skin_Layer, which has informal structures with chairs, furniture legs, and hangers, has wheels that can make these structures move. This represents the moment we confront objects while walking in the city and shows how we respond to changes and adapt.
