〈More human than human〉, 2022 .
spraypaint on wall, 300x700cm(2).
Darbotz deeply loves Jakarta, the city of his dwelling. The main subject matter of his projects is related with the daily landscapes of the massive city that Jakartans, including himself, confront every day: in other words, traffic jams, chaos, and fun, among others. The artist represents such a complicated society, poverty, and lives in an unsystematic society by depicting the everyday scenes of the jostling city with black and white murals.
The artist believes that an individual going through a hectic life in a large city creates his or her unique monster inherent in oneself. The monster figure (squid) that appears in every aspect of his works is both his alter ego and the monster existing inside the people coping with their intense lives.
For this exhibition, more human than human was created by Darbotz for the ten days of his stay at Space 6, ACC Creation in the Asia Culture Center. He painted the inner monsters, which people have no choice but to contain in themselves even when fiercely fighting for their survival, in the two walls in the size of 7 meters in a comical manner. With this work, the artist exclaims that as humans we are very special existences and it is necessary for us to reveal our inner monsters as we go through such tough lives.
