The Longest Minute
The hard work of frozen food workers is what allows us to enjoy mackerel in the comfort of our home whenever we want. For these people working in extreme temperatures of -25℃, a minute is very long indeed. In contrast, early-morning delivery workers have to visit one home every five minutes to deliver our orders. For them, five minutes is all too short. We enjoy comfortable lives thanks to the benefits of civilization with things like freezing and refrigeration technology—but there is always someone working behind the scenes to sustain our day-to-day lives.
The “Three Kilometers a Week” Diet
Ever heard of the “food mile diet”? The term “food mile” refers to the distance travelled by food as it makes its way from its place of origin through the production, transportation, and distribution stages until it reaches the consumer’s dinner table. Our refrigerators are filled with items that have racked up food miles all over the world. It’s time for us to turn our attention to regional and seasonal foods, reducing greenhouse gas emissions as we cultivate our own gardens and practice the food mile diet.
