Delivery Dancer’s Sphere

〈Delivery Dancer’s Sphere〉, 2022.

Single-channel video, 25 min

Set in a fictionalized version of Seoul, the film features a female delivery rider who races through time and space to experience the warping of space and time and the possible world. The work utilizes a variety of methods including live-action filming, game engines, LiDAR-scanned reconstructions of urban spaces, and 3D scans, to reveal the multiple realities of the “Delivery Dancer”. The protagonist, Ernst Mo, is a rider for the delivery platform company “Delivery Dancer,” who navigates the maze-like terrain of Seoul to make deliveries in the shortest distance and time possible. However, Ernst Mo occasionally comes face-to-face with En Storm, who is her exact double, due to topological distortions and unforeseen errors caused by the Delivery Dancer app’s AI algorithm, “Dance Master.” Their encounters are triggered by the unpredictable disruptions and contingencies of algorithmic processes. Each time they meet, Ernst Mo’s perception of time slows down, causing her to experience delays in her deliveries. The protagonists trapped in the endless generative circuit of an AI algorithm that calculates and predicts every possible path resemble individuals in the real world who are forced to optimize for speed and productivity. This is a work of speculative fiction that delves into the realm of possibilities and contingency, set against the backdrop of rampant neoliberalism and the harsh realities of platform labor. In this interconnected world of virtuality and reality, we enter a new dimension where AI algorithms, surveillance and control, synchronized bodies, labor, and desire converge.
